change for brunei?

May 14, 2008 – 7:18 pm

Hi zul…

Read ur post about our beloved country.. I also support the view that our country needs to change… Not change drastically but in terms of efficiency and capability in improving the country’s system and workforce.. Apparently now, bruneians get jobs easily due to the fact that friends and families in the govt help them rather than choosing the capable and qualified people.. Why can’t the people’s mindset change?

It would only worsen the situation as these people would not work as effectively and effieciently.. Everyone knows that some of the govt people just sit there and relax and wait for their salary to come into their account.. What about their work? You can see that they do not care on improving the country and society as they are there just to get all the benefits.. The govt system should change.. What about educating people of the real issues of the world nowadays?

With all the recession, the poverty in other countries and wars happening.. The bruneian people are what u called too “keduluran”.. They just care about themselves with all the benefits that our beloved ruler bestowed on them.. They dont even think others than themselves.. I am worried about the waste disposal in the country as well.. Why dnt the govt educate these people on separating their waste such as plastics, metal tin cans, paper… Recycling these stuff is important as well..

  2. Dear How Pathetic, :) pathetic we are indeed!! Your views on job seekers and people easily getting jobs, i agree 100%. People just seem to fill in these positions with family members. You know i just doesn’t happen in top management, sometime the people handling job applicantions just simply eliminate others so top management really couldn’t make a better decision. All in all, we are doomed. Have you ever heard of the mentality, looking after other people’s rice bowl? I have encountered this before where someone who is clearly not perfoming in his job, who is entitled to be removed from his position, is still being kept simply because people have this mentality. “Siapa kan membagi anak bininya makan…”, don’t these people (management) should think that these workers should really look after their own rice bowl and it shouldn’t be the management responsibility to look after their families. I am for one, believe in these people are a classic case of being spoon fed. Once again, nothing is real in Brunei hehe, and i do believe this fits into your “keduluran” idea.

I support recycling 100%, i believe in this too, but it doesn’t work here in Brunei, not for at least another 20 years when Brunei is in trouble. Just to give you a better idea, what ever happend to ope fire burning…what ever happen to the $10,000 fine that was supposed to be imposed? A classic view on this is that, schools around the country are the main culprits. Every afternoon, mr.cleaner in some school will burn dead leaves or rubbish freely, and what does the authority do? Just a simple, “Jgn kita menunu lagi pakcik ah, kana fine tani krg.”, a week later this old man will do it again. All of these things are important for us to sustain a peaceful, clean, good moral society but nobody sees that right now my dear friend. The people who care are still a minority.

  4. Saya rasa kerana kekurang ilmu membuatkan begitu.

    Kekurangan dorongan.
    Kekurangan contoh.
    Kekurangan disiplin.

Saya rasa orang tidak tahu kebaikan asap dari pembakaran rumput untuk pokok pokok.
    Asap baik boleh menyuburkan pokok.

Saya rasa orang tidak tahu kegunaan rumput-rumput yang telah dipotong. Saya pun tida tahu.
Saya andaikan boleh jadi baja. Hahaha
    Atau boleh dimanfaatkan.

The bottom line we don’t know what to do the best for ourselve and environment. Hahaa

Apa yang kita tahu? Suruh buang arah orang lain dan kitani lagi terpaksa keluar duit.

Langkat pertama ilmu dan langkah kedua buka perusahaan recycle. insya Allah boleh maju sebab banyak sampah wah ( sebenarnya bernilai )

  6. hi guysss…interesting topic about changing brunei. id like to say, about your view on employment - helped by relatives, family, etc the truth is, it happens everywhere. i like to add some on changing brunei, in fact is that people in brunei has change drastically. we complain more, all is computerized, etc..and in the past 20 years, we do experienced changes..dont u think so? people starts to question ridicoulous questionsss…that is a change. however, i really hope there are more choices in term of shopping within brunei..i myself like to shop for designer goods, i wana see brunei equivalent to other countries around us (KL, Singapore..)in malay..kalau ada butik2 anie, jarang ku kan belayar keluar negri menghabiskan duit bali barang2 anie. well, i wana bruneian people to look good, stylish, posh, hip…let it be CK, Valentino, DKNY, Chanel, Gucci..alot to mention here..i have been travelling alot and whenever people ask me where i came from (and i said Brunei), immediately they say, wahhh ur country is rich, rich people bla bla bla…in fact not everybody is rich (im not) so make the people outside brunei realize their assumption is damn true! we are rich, always rich (kata sejuta kali!! in The Name of Allah we will!!)instead we complain around here and there services does not meet ur satisfaction (iatah makbul doa kamu atu!) i always remember, services provided by the government of Brunei is not ’secubit’ but its really big. syukur tah banyak masih tani dapat free and paid by our Government whereas org luar kan kapisan membayar..(e.g. health and education)..membayar pun nda jua seberapa, kalau ranking mahalnya 1 sampai 10, i rank only 0.5 saja (imagine how lucky we are?!) so people, buka mata, buka minda…BRUNEIANS ARE LUCKY PEOPLE (indeed!) be proud with it, i know i am!! ok guysss cheers…

  8. well from my viewpoint changing Brunei is more than solving some nepotism problem. We need a change in policies and change in mindset.

80% of locals are in the Government sector. so 20% are working in the private sector. Now tell me, how can a country move forward when most of your workforce are in the government? The private sector is the King of Development. Government is there to regulate the progress of that development.

By the way, 70%-80% of private sector are comprised of foreigners. And private sector, if your business operations are successful=$$$. And where is the money flowing? You guessed it…out of the country.

    solution:
We should grant citizenships to successful foreign entrepreneurs. this will retain our money.
We should impose income tax. I know its a pain. But do you think Brunei can maintain your health expenses and allowances indefinitely? if you have a better idea, i want to hear it!
We should improve education system. we have a lot of work to do on this area. we need more education in I.T. field. Government schools need to branch out from conventional teaching methods and find better ways/programmes of teaching the next generation.
Also might i suggest military school? we have too much dropouts as it is. And you know most of our soldiers are unable to pursue academic degrees? why can’t we offer them a sense of discipline and a shining future as well?
Allow more transparency from Government institutions. I know almost nothing what each ministry is doing. i have to conduct an interview with them to know what they’re doing year to year.
Less red tapes and more incentives for foreign investments to flow in…

    :D

  9. The most frustrating thing about Brunei is that it has so much potential, yet it’s just being wasted.

  10. yeah indeed a good point, the govt should really consider and presuade those big boss who are outsider to stay and gain them PR or citizenship, how ever our local ppl here have diff toughts,we are too relazed and scared those PR or outsider might threaten out jobs, infact i found this a good thing,i mean we all bruneians will start to wake up and realised we know that they are a lot of challengers out there and then we need to improved ourself alot,i am not saying these because i am already a public sector servant :P

  13. Wow! This has grown….my point on this topic was not to instill hate or start an arguement. It is not a point whether i like brunei or not. To those who replied that i’m ungrateful of Brunei and its benefits as a citizen…well, sorry to say that you are wrong. Its never good to assume things, as you can see…..

I would also like to point out that, i can see some readers has some creative ideas in pushing brunei forward. This is an encouragement, its good to see that a whole lot of bruneians are really thinking.

For those of you that think that i am ungrateful: Think again, if i didn’t complain it means i am willing to let brunei go and migrate somewhere else. Plus i am not one to suggest to say “biar tia, insyallah lambat laun ok tu.” Wouldn’t i be ungrateful if i just worry about myself and not think about my future kids? Am i just really thinking about looking after brunei in my own lifetime?? Do i just worry about myself? Well, being constructive in my lifetime is to pave the way for all future bruneians…..to have a better future for my kids and to really understand that our current situation is crap and if its not improved our kids will suffer. As time goes by Brunei is always left behind by the world. We have been blindfolded by our own newspapers, we have been left out by our own so called head of ministries…hell, do we believe everything the newspapers and our ministers say without even finding out the truth?

For those with constructive comments: Thank you for beliving that Brunei has a better future and for voicing out your concerns. I really think that HM is trying to push us to work harder without installing an iron hand. HM has always been there to support constructive ideas. I applaud the economist for voicing out ideas from his point of view. Yes my friend, thats the idea to move forward and i’m sure others will have more ideas and impacts that could lead us to the vision of a world leader as HM would have wanted. Keep chugging along the “working for Brunei’s future” rail line, someday or someone will be listening to us and let’s hope for a nation which instills the truth, for the good and care for its people.

A reply to the comments by GOOD PEOPLE: please do not reply if you have no constructive ideas or arguements. It is clear that you will be selfish enough to just look after your own plate rather than working towards improving brunei. Obviously i would “MIRROR” myself before putting comments for everyone to see and for god’s sake we are not even arguing..its called being constructive and throwing ideas onto a plate…in case you don’t understand what i’m saying its an idealist opportunity for us to voice our concerns right here (thank you for the creators of this service)and to really tell people what is really happening. Hang on a second, did i just burst your bubble? Did i just point out your mistakes? Hah! Maybe you’re one of those who doesn’t believe in change….let me recommend you to read a book called: “who move my cheese” maybe that’ll help you out a bit…that’s if you’re bothered anyway.

    Assalamualaikum.
