I am here to bring forth the issue of ‘minimum wage’ concerning our maids or house helpers. I am sure the majority of households in Brunei employ at least one maid, if not more. They work long hours, usually as long as they are awake they are working. Some, not all, are fortunate enough to have Sundays off. This means that work is basically their whole life - they wake up and work until everyone in the house is sleeping and no longer requires their assistance. However, I have noticed that employees are only required to pay a minimum wage of $300 to these full-time maids. That is $30 a day, and less than $1 an hour, assuming the maid works for 12 hours each day. Is that what we have come to? Paying our loyal helpers less than $1 an hour? What do maids do?
